A Sandy Halloween...

We are recovering from the effects of 'Superstorm Sandy' and finally have power back to our house as of last night.  We do not, however have internet or phone service back yet, so I am taking advantage of some public library time to connect to the wi-fi and publish this post.

A few weeks ago we visited a fairy house exhibit at a local museum.  There were about 50 fairy houses located all throughout the grounds.  We had a great time.

We also took advantage of some unseasonably warm weather a few weeks ago to have lunch at 'picnic rock'  a flat table-like rock behind the old one room schoolhouse down the road from us.

Last week we attended our Ward Halloween party where the girls wore their 'Peacock Princess' costumes.

The next day we went to the orchard to pick out our pumpkins for carving... and to measure ourselves on the apple ruler.

On Monday, Hurricane Sandy rolled in.  The governor closed all the roads to non-essential traffic at 1pm, so Tim cancelled patients for Monday afternoon and Tuesday all day.  We lost power around 4pm on Monday which prompted the 'Hurricane Sandy Circus' by Sarah and Claudia.  It consisted of repeatedly jumping off the coffee table and spinning glow necklaces around arms.

We powered up our generator (acquired last year after Hurricane Irene blew through) to keep the fridge and freezer running, and used a little of the power to light one lamp long enough to carve our pumpkins.

On Halloween, our town was still 95% without power, with trees still down all over the place.  With that in mind, the mayor made the call to postpone trick-or-treating until Monday, November 5th. One of our neighbors decided to organize a 'Black-out Block Party' so the girls got to do a tiny bit of outdoor trick-or-treating in one of the local cul-de-sacs.
So, all in all, Halloween wasn't a total bust, and the power outage didn't seem half so trying as last year due to our wonderful generator, and one lamp to give us some light in the darkness.

With school canceled all week, and no power at home, we have had to be creative in our efforts to keep boredom at bay.  The girls and I went swimming (and took warm showers) one day at the YMCA, and went to the park and library another day.
